DIY Ombré Pom Poms

Posted by on March 22, 2012

pom pom fun!

I know, I know, the pom pom thing has been around for years, but it just doesn’t get old to me. For Roark’s first family birthday this Friday we are celebrating with his favorite new activity… swimming! This boy LOVES the water!! I have decided to stick with a water theme and revolve the party around sea creatures and shades of blue. I thought I would get a head start on decorations today with multicolored pom poms or ombré pom poms (to sound cool and up with the new fad). I had some blue tissue paper left over from Erin’s baby shower so I was able to get started without having to make a trip to the store! Read on to see a step by step picture tutorial of how to make multicolored pom poms. And check back next week for a recap of Friday’s festivities!!!

First pick three complimentary or harmonious colors of 20-by-30-inch sheets of tissue. Stack 8-10 sheets on top of each other going from light to dark. Make 1 1/2-inch-wide accordion folds, creasing with each fold.

Once you are finished with your accordion fold, find pretty ribbon and cut it to about 18 inches. Fold tissue in half to find the center.

Tie ribbon in a knot at the center point, then again at the ends so you have a loop for hanging

Trim ends of tissue into rounded or pointy shapes

Separate layers, pulling away from center one at a time

I like to work my way to the center separating from both sides.

Fluff it up and there you have it... a ombré pom pom

I love the idea of using pom poms in lieu of flowers on a table for a inexpensive pop of color!
